The Knights Hospitaller were actually the predecessors of the Templars and other military orders. But unlike those other knights, the Hospitallers were more focused on protecting pilgrims than fighting in the Holy Land (even though they definitely did that too), we even get the word ‘hospital’ from them. They took part in some of the Crusades but evolved into more than mere warriors.
