Do Cops Get Away With Crimes?

Hell yes, police officers get away with things that would get normal civilians hauled off.

How about getting out of routine traffic stops? In many major cities it is normal for the local police union to issue special cards to cops for their friends and families to use when they get pulled over. I mean, for souvenirs. *ahem*

Then there’s Qualified Immunity, a legal standard that prevents a cop from being held accountable for violating someone else’s rights. QI ostensibly allows cops to do their jobs without fear of frivolous lawsuits. Not to get away with blatantly unconstitutional abuses of their power. *ahem*

Perhaps the best known example is the tortured concept of civil asset forfeiture, in which police theft is legalized. Basically, the police can confiscate your property without ever charging you with a crime. If that sounds like a horrifically obvious way to encourage corruption, you’re right.

Of course, there’s always the old classic of just good old corruption. The thin blue line that forms around rapists, stalkers, and just every type of criminal activity you could think of.

I am not anti-cop. I am very much pro-cop. However, there is a demonstrable lack of accountability at all levels of government and the government employees with the weapons to kill me need much more accountability than they currently have.
